Is My Child Overweight?
Statistics show that nearly 20% of children aged 6-19 are obese. The term "obese" for children means they have a BMI or Body Mass Index that is above the 95th percentile of children of the same age and sex.

Having overweight kids means having overweight adults in many cases. It is best to deal with your child's overweight/obesity as soon as it is discovered. This can prevent the damaging effects of carrying too much weight.

Overweight and obesity are epidemics in the United States. Both children and adults are increasing in weight at an alarming rate. In the past 20 years the population of adult obese people has DOUBLED, while the number of obese children has TRIPLED.
What is a safe weight for your child?
Having a BMI under the 85th percentile for BMI age and sex adjusted charts means your chid is not overweight.

If your child is less than 95th percentile for BMI age and sex adjusted charts means your chid is not obese. Conversely, if your child is at the 95th percentile or above, they are considered obese and are at risk of serious health problems. Being obese is simply a more severe form of being overweight.

If your child falls between the 85th and 95th percentile then your child IS overweight.

The BMI is the standard way to screen whether children are overweight or obese. It is a measurement that takes into account the weight, height, sex, and age of the child and then compares them to similar-age-and-sex peers. BMI is accurate in children and directly correlates with body fat. BMI can be found by plugging height and weight measurements into a chart or calculator like the one below. For children the term "overweight" refers to a child that is above the 85th percentile, but below the 95th percentile of BMI-for age and sex charts.
